Playing More Cash Games : Soccer season

The past year has gone by so fast it’s amazing we are already in November getting ready for the Holidays. I mean Christmas Items have been in Costco and Walmart since September. I used to think that was insane but the way time has been going by as fast as it has, it actually makes good sense.
Three of the four girls have really been involved in soccer this year and the fourth has decided to play this coming January. At $80.00 just to register thats easy math for one to figure out. YES, $320.00 just to play plus the expense of shoes for the girls who are in a growing spurt $25.00 fee if you do not sell the leagues fund raiser items and $60.00 to $70.00 a pop for their turn in snacks. The three month season costs around $1000.00 for them to play which to me is priceless for several reasons. To see my daughters out there running, working hard and very athletic brings a huge smile to my face and joy in my heart. The younger daughter Bianca (green jersey) is very talented and she has an awesome coach this year. I wish all Coaches were as good as Coach Bobby but their not. Jennifer and Jasmine (purple Jerseys) are the smallest girls on their team but they have a ton of heart and I am very suprised at their athletic ability and desire for the game. Their coach gave this big speech at the beginning of the season how much he has done in the soccer community and how many of his kids have college scholarships to play soccer. What a joke he has turned out to be! Late for practices and a few times he has not even shown. This past week was his daughters turn for snacks and they did not even bring any. She is also the laziest whiniest girl I have ever been around, yet her father continues to play her all game. Several of the parents have begun to yell at him during the games and rightfully so! Our teams parents are all very cool people. Not one is obstinate or a pain in the ass. I enjoy talking to each and everyone of them, it has to be the first time in my 37 years of coaching and being a parent there has not been one out of place parent associated with a team.
San Manuel Indian Casino
I had been playing the 100-300 NL buy in which is also known as the $2-$5 game. I had some early success in it but the game has changed recently due to some wild play. I love playing against people like that who have no respect for money and keep digging into their pockets several times a session to re-buy. However, for me the past several weeks the “chasers” as I call them have been on a lucky streak and I have been knocked down a notch or two bankroll wise.
I am still in the black for the year but not by much. I have found a new interest in playing cash over tournaments recently due to my mild success and my love for the game. San Manuel which is only 15 minutes from my house is where I have been playing on my days off lately. The girls are in school and Mrs.D is at work so for a few hours once or twice a week I head to their Poker room. They have some nice promotions daily and their jackpots tend to grow fast and even though I have come close several times the past few months, I have not been involved at a table that has won one.
I decided to drop down to the $4-$8 limit game with a “Kill’ If the NL guys were going to chase as the 4-8 guys do. I might as well only lose $100.00 buy in instead of a $300.00 buy in and stilll try and win a jackpot or high hand of the hour promotion.
There are a few pitfalls about going to San Manuel. There floor people could give a shit about it’s players, there food service personnel are the worst and the majority of their dealers are rude and appear pissed off if you dont give them a $1 tip after raking in a pot. Where does it say in Poker you should or have to tip a dealer because you won a pot? They deal maybe 30-40 hands an hour thats pretty good money but I hate when the expect it and there have been more than a few times I have tipped and not even a thank you from the dealer. So lately unless its a huge pot I stopped tipping to most dealers. There are a few who appreciate you so I tip them, but the majority…. NO WAY!
The food is no where near as good as the Bike and Commerce but I dont go there for the food or the friendship with the staff, I go there to make money and hone my poker playing skills such as reading people and mixing up my style of game and keeping fresh and competitive.
Yesterday was a great day I hit quad aces 2 times but no one had a jack pot hand and I lost a few hands when I had sets to flushes but the bad players missed alot yesterday and I picked off a few bluffs so I was very happy with Poker yesterday.
I raised with A-10 of hearts in late position to $8 and had five players call. The flop was Jh-Kc-Qh. So I flopped the straight so I bet out $4 as did the other 5 players. I thought to myself good but bad at the same time because so many things could happen with this many callers but if this hand holds up, its going to be a nice pot. The turn was a 6 and I bet out $8 as did 3 others. The player to my right said “ok lets see what you do with this” and puts out $16. I immediately raised him $24 and he and one other player called.
The river was the Kh giving me a Royal Flush!!!, only the second one I have ever had playing live Poker in 4 plus years. The guy on my left bet $8 and the guy to my right raised it to $16 and I then raised again to $24. The guy on my left called the raise as he was all in now and the guy to my right thought for a minute and just called. The guy on the left had 6-8 hearts for a baby flush and when I turned over my A10h the guy to my right slammed down his KQ full house. The Poker gods tried to beat me in this pot on the river as they have been the past few years but they put the wrong King down and I raked in a $400 pot. I also was to receive a hat and a shirt from San Manuel for the Royal Flush but the floor staff said the office door was locked and they gave me a little sticky note I.O.U.
Thank goodness for my Poker winnings lately it has helped me with paying for soccer and a few other items we need around the house. I spend close to $600.00 month in gas just to go to work each month and with NO overtime to help, Poker has been a small blessing. I just hope I can continue to do well and keep up with the younger players and eventually win another tournament in the next year. My goal is to win an Event at the LAPC in 2012 and have a good profitable year. I have to play more, but my family comes first so doing the soccer thing 3 -4 times a week limits my ability to play but I love watching the girls play and life is good!
